What Is a Fire Risk Assessment?
A Fire Risk Assessment is a structured review of a building, its occupants and the fire safety measures in place. Who Is Responsible for a Fire Risk Assessment?
Fire safety legislation places responsibility for managing fire safety on the person or people who have control of a premises. In England and Wales, this person is known as the Responsible Person under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
Depending on the building and how it is occupied, the Responsible Person may be an employer, building owner, landlord, occupier, managing agent, facilities manager or another person with control of the premises. In some buildings, more than one person or organisation may share responsibility and must work together to ensure fire safety is properly managed.
The Responsible Person must ensure that a suitable and sufficient Fire Risk Assessment is carried out, that significant findings are recorded and that appropriate fire safety measures are implemented to protect people who may be at risk.
